2023 Acura TLX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2023 TLX?

The smart key in your TLX is a proximity fob. The car is constantly broadcasting a low-frequency signal, and when it detects your fob nearby, it authenticates it through the vehicle's security system. That's what lets the door handles unlock by touch and what allows the engine to start. The fob also has five buttons for remote functions.

Q: How long does the dealer process actually take for a TLX key replacement?

Longer than it should. The programming itself takes minutes once a tech is at the car, but Acura service departments book key work around their full service schedule. Owners on forums have reported being quoted same-day only to be called at closing and told the work didn't get done. Then there's the parts side. TLX fob availability has been inconsistent enough that some owners waited weeks for parts to come in.

Q: I bought a replacement TLX fob online. Can I program it myself or bring it to you?

You can bring it to me, but check one thing first: make sure the fob you bought carries the correct factory FCC ID for the 2023 TLX. There are a lot of aftermarket and cross-listed fobs that look identical but won't pair correctly. If the FCC ID matches, I can register it to your vehicle with my diagnostic equipment. There's no self-programming sequence for this system. No button combo, no ignition cycle trick.

Q: Only one of my door handles stopped doing touch unlock. Is the fob going bad?

Probably not the fob. If one handle works and the other doesn't, the key is almost certainly fine. The touch sensors in the door handles on the TLX are independent, and owners have reported single-handle failures while the rest of the system works normally. Wipe down the handle area, especially around the sensor zone, and retest. If it stays isolated to one door, you're looking at that door's handle sensor or its wiring, not the smart key.

2023 Acura TLX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in South Winds, right near the mobile home park off Gonzales Road. He had a 2023 TLX and a cracked fob. The housing had split along the seam, probably from being dropped, and the buttons were flexing loose from the board. The dealer gave him a quote for a full replacement key, cut and programmed. He nearly took it.

He called me instead.

When I got there, I popped the fob open on my work tray and looked at the circuit board. Clean. No corrosion, no cracked traces, no water damage. The electronics were completely fine. The only thing wrong was the plastic shell holding it all together.

I transferred his working internals into a fresh housing, dropped in a new CR2032 while I had it open, and seated everything back together properly. Then I walked every function with him watching: touch unlock on both front handles, the lock and unlock buttons, the other buttons, and start. All of it came back exactly as it should.

He asked me if I needed to reprogram anything. I told him no, nothing was disturbed. The electronics never left the fob. The car never forgot it.

What got him was how straightforward it turned out to be. His whole week had been built around the dealer visit, the wait, the loaner question. He saved a good chunk and never had to leave his driveway.

Acura TLX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Acura dealer to get a replacement key for my 2023 TLX?▼

No. A qualified mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic tools can cut and program a replacement smart key for the 2023 TLX on site. Acura owners sometimes hear "you have to go to the dealer" from generic locksmiths, and that's true of shops that don't carry the right equipment. But the TLX shares its key programming architecture with Honda's broader lineup, so a specialist who works that system regularly handles it the same way.
