A condo board president in Victoria Estates called me on a Tuesday afternoon with a problem the dealer had already given up on. Her 2020 TLX was sitting on the lowest level of her building's underground garage, low ceiling, tight spiral ramp, no flatbed getting in there. She had one fob left and it had stopped being recognized by the car. The dealer told her to figure out how to get the vehicle to them first. She said, "How am I supposed to do that without a working key?"
That's where I come in.
I parked on the street, grabbed my bag, and walked down. The garage smelled like concrete and motor oil and the lighting was those long fluorescent strips that flicker at one end. I set up next to her car.
The fob she handed me was the original five-button unit. I opened it up and checked the battery first. The CR2032 wasn't dead by voltage alone, but it was reading low under load, just enough to be unreliable. I swapped it, cleaned the contacts, and tested range and door-handle touch unlock before I even touched the programming tool. No change in the key-not-detected warning. Battery wasn't the whole story.
I pulled out the diagnostic equipment, connected at the OBD port, and walked through the immobilizer registration process. The system needed the fob re-enrolled, and once that cleared, I registered a second fob as a spare so she'd have a backup going forward. Cut the emergency insert blade to match the door, tested every function on both fobs, and watched her drive out of that garage under her own power.
The dealer quote assumed she could somehow get the car there first. I just walked in with a bag.
