She was parked near the bluff off of Meade Ave on The Mesa, a spot she'd used a hundred times. The TLX wouldn't acknowledge the fob at all. Not the door handles, not the start button. The key-not-detected warning was sitting right there on the dash. She'd already tried a new battery.

The first thing I do on any smart key call is confirm the fob is genuinely dead and not just out of pairing, and this one had lost its registration. The fob itself was fine. The battery was fine. I set up on the driver's side with the door open, plugged into the port under the dash, and walked through the registration process. By the time I was testing all five buttons and confirming the door handles were reading the fob correctly, she was still on her phone call.
She mentioned almost offhand that she'd called the dealer first. They told her to tow it in, that they'd need it for the better part of a day, and quoted her a number that made her pause. She paid a fraction of that, standing next to her own car, in a neighborhood she knows.
