A man in Las Positas called on a Tuesday morning. He was older, used a cane, and lived in one of the senior communities off Las Positas Road. His 2018 TLX was parked right outside his building, but it might as well have been parked on the moon. His only fob had stopped responding, and the mechanical backup key inside the fob was getting stiff in the door lock from barely being used. He mentioned his daughter usually handled things like this, but she was out of town. He asked, very directly, if I could just come to him.
I was there in under an hour. The fob battery was the factory original, four years in at that point, and it had finally given out. I replaced the CR2032, cleaned the contact points, and ran through all five buttons. Touch unlock on both front handles was good. Start button saw the fob without hesitation. Then I decoded the door lock mechanically and cut a fresh spare so he'd never be down to zero keys again. I showed him once, slowly, how to pop the fob cover and swap the battery himself if it ever came to that.
He didn't have to call a cab, arrange a ride to a dealer across town, or wait three days for an appointment slot. The car was twenty feet from his front door the whole time. That's the job.
