1999 BMW M3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key from my BMW so it no longer works?

Yes. The immobilizer on the 1999 M3 stores registered keys, and a programming session can clear the lost or stolen key from the system so it won't start the car. Any key not present and re-enrolled during that process gets dropped. If you lost a key or had one stolen, getting this done promptly is worth it.

Q: Does my 1999 BMW M3 remote head key have a hidden emergency blade?

The remote head key on the 1999 M3 is a single integrated unit, so the blade is right there, it is not hidden or retractable the way later BMW flip-style fobs work. The blade is exposed and fixed. What some owners on E36 forums do note is that the driver door lock cylinder can get stiff or seized from years of not being used, since most people just hit the remote.

Q: My 1999 M3 remote stopped working after I replaced the battery. What is actually going on?

This comes up a lot on E36 forums. A few things can cause it. First, the fob on these older BMWs can lose its synchronization with the car if the battery is removed for too long or if the battery fully drains before you swap it. The fob and the car's receiver use a rolling code, and if they fall out of sync, the remote just stops responding even though everything is technically fine.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself to my 1999 M3?

For the remote portion, there is an owner-accessible sync procedure on E36-era BMWs, so in some cases you can bring a compatible replacement fob into sync with the car without professional tools. That is different from newer BMWs where everything requires dealer-level software. However, the key blade still needs to be cut to your car, and the immobilizer side of the equation still needs to be handled correctly.

1999 BMW M3 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to South Bank in Oxnard from a guy who had already been through one locksmith and was considering just calling the dealer. His 1999 BMW M3 was starting fine but the remote had completely stopped responding. No lock, no unlock, nothing. He'd already swapped the CR2032 twice with brand new batteries from two different stores.

I pulled the fob apart on the spot. The battery was seated correctly, the contacts looked clean at first glance. Then I got a better look under my light. There were two hairline cracks in the solder around the main circuit board connections, classic for fobs this age. The plastic gets brittle, the case flexes over the years, and eventually those joints give out. The battery reads fine, the key blade works, but the remote circuit is effectively broken.

On a fob this old, a reflow isn't always reliable long-term. We talked about it honestly. He went with a replacement fob, which I cut and programmed on site.

The car was back to fully working before he finished his coffee. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him something that made him wince. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and he didn't have to leave South Bank.

BMW M3 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 1999 BMW M3?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who knows these E36-era BMWs before you call a dealer or a tow truck. All-keys-lost on a 1999 M3 means the replacement key has to be properly introduced to the immobilizer system, and the car needs to be present for that. A dealer will want the car towed in, then schedule it, then charge accordingly. We come to you in South Bank or anywhere in Oxnard and handle the whole job on site.
