A guy at the watch repair kiosk near Five Points Shopping Center in Oxnard flagged me down while I was finishing another call. His 1999 M3 would crank strong but die instantly. Another locksmith had cut him a key and told him the DME was bad when the car quit starting three days later.
The DME was not bad.
What happened was textbook. The previous locksmith never completed the ISN synchronization between the EWS2 module and the MS41.2 DME. BMW's system gives a short grace window where the car will run without a confirmed rolling code handshake. Once that window closes, fuel injection cuts and you are stuck. I pulled the EWS2 data with my VVDI2, read the ISN from the DME, and matched them. His remote head key, FCC ID LX8FZV, had a working PCF7935 chip and the 3-button remote side was fine. The problem was purely the sync layer. Reprogrammed the transponder to the corrected EWS2 data, verified the ISN match, and the engine caught and held on the first turn.
He sat in the driver seat for a second with his hand on the key like he was waiting for it to cut out again. It did not.
The whole job took about 40 minutes in the parking lot. A fraction of what the dealer wanted, no tow, no week-long wait for a parts-counter appointment.
