Over near Pole Creek Trail in Fillmore, a woman had her only key to a 2001 BMW M3 slip off the roof of the car and hit the tandem parking spot concrete. The shell split clean open. The blade snapped, half of it still jammed in the driver door lock. Fob housing in one hand, nothing working in the other.
She had bought the car used with one key. Always meant to get a spare. That was three years ago.
I got out there and checked the PCF7935 chip from the cracked fob first. Still intact. That was the break, because it meant I could read the transponder data with my VVDI2 and skip a full EWS3 module pull. On the E46 chassis, a full all-keys-lost job means either reading the EWS3 module directly from the board (the Motorola MC68HC05 processor on the unit, part number 61.35-6 905 667 on most E46 M3s) or going through ISTA if you have dealer access. Having that original chip saved a good chunk of time.
I extracted the broken blade fragment from the door cylinder, decoded the lock, and cut two fresh HU92 blanks. Rebuilt her original fob into a new LX8FZV shell, transplanting the working electronics and replacing the dead VL2020 rechargeable cell while I was in there. Programmed the second key fresh to the EWS3.
She watched me test both keys on start, remote lock, remote unlock, and trunk. Fifty minutes, zero keys to two. She just held both of them in her palm for a second like she was weighing whether to trust the situation.
If you still have your broken fob, bring it. The chip data inside is almost always recoverable, and it makes the whole job faster and cheaper than a cold all-keys-lost.
