Downtown Fillmore, late afternoon. A woman called about her 2001 BMW M3. She'd bought it used a couple of years back with one key, kept meaning to get a spare cut, and never got around to it. That's the most common setup I see on these older BMWs.
The fob had fallen in the tandem parking lot outside her apartment. Concrete does what concrete does. The shell split clean, the blade snapped at the shoulder, and the blade stub was stuck inside her door lock. She had the fob housing in one hand and nothing that worked.
I got there, extracted the blade fragment from the cylinder without damaging the lock, then decoded the cut from the cylinder itself since the broken blade wasn't giving me a clean read. The chip in the old fob was still intact despite the cracked housing, and reading the data off it saved a meaningful amount of time compared to going straight to the module.
I built two new keys, enrolled them, and tested every function: lock, unlock, the third button, and confirmed the car started on both. She watched the whole thing from about three feet away, which I prefer. Less explaining to do at the end.
From the moment I pulled up to handing her two working keys was right around 50 minutes. She mentioned the dealer had given her a number that made her put it off for months. That's usually how it goes with these cars.
