2013 BMW X6
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I still have one working key. Is it worth getting a spare cut now?

Yes, and the reason is simple: when you have a working key in hand, making a spare is fast. I can cut a second key from code or by decoding the lock while the car is right there. When that last key is gone, the job gets harder because I have to decode the lock to generate a cut rather than copying a known good key. Spare key now is low effort. All-keys-lost later is more involved. Do the spare.

Q: Are aftermarket BMW keys worth buying online, or should I go OEM spec?

For a Mechanical Key vehicle, the remote and chip side of the equation does not apply here. What you are buying is a key blank and the cut. The blank has to match the keyway correctly or it will not turn the cylinder. A lot of generic blanks sold online have tolerances that are slightly off, which means the key might enter the lock but bind on rotation, or it works loose over time.

Q: Can I decode or cut this key from the VIN, or does the car have to be present?

Both methods are available, and which one I use depends on the situation. The VIN links to a key code on file, which lets me cut the key before I even arrive at the car, provided ownership is verified. That is the faster path when everything lines up. If the key code is not accessible through available channels, I decode the lock on site by reading the cylinder directly. Either way, the car does not need to go anywhere.

Q: My 2013 X6 key is getting hard to turn in the ignition. Is that a key problem or a cylinder problem?

Could be either, and it matters which one. A worn key develops rounded edges over years of use, and those edges stop lifting the tumblers cleanly. The cylinder itself can also wear, especially if the same key has been used hard for over a decade. A quick way to tell: if a freshly cut key to code turns noticeably easier, the old key was the problem. If a fresh cut still binds, the cylinder needs attention.

2013 BMW X6 Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from Five Points in Oxnard, guy standing next to his 2013 BMW X6 in a parking lot off Saviers Road. He had lost his only key somewhere during the day, checked every pocket, retraced his steps through two stores. Nothing. The car was just sitting there.

He had already called the dealer. They told him it would be a few days minimum and he would need to tow the car in. He did not love that answer, so he looked us up instead.

I asked him to pull the VIN off the lower corner of the windshield and read it to me before I left. That number tells me what I need to know about what I am cutting, so I can arrive ready. He texted me a photo of his registration too, which helped confirm the ownership piece.

When I got there, I decoded the lock cylinder on site rather than pulling anything apart. Cut the replacement key to match, tested it in the door and the ignition. It worked clean on the first try.

He asked about the dealer quote. I told him to call us next time something like this comes up. He said he already saved my number.

BMW X6 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a lost key for a 2013 BMW X6?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. For a Mechanical Key vehicle like this one, the job is cutting a key to the car, either from the VIN-linked key code or by decoding the lock directly. No tow required, no waiting days for a key to be ordered in. You save time and you pay a fraction of what a dealer visit costs.
