Old Town Goleta, right off Hollister near the railroad tracks. A guy with a 2025 Envista showed up at his car with groceries and a dead smart key.
The HYQ4ES wouldn't unlock anything. He tried the emergency blade in the driver door - nothing. Turns out he'd been using an aftermarket key cover that squeezed the fob too tight and cracked the board near the antenna. The physical damage killed the 433MHz transmitter but left the transponder chip working, so the car would start if he held the fob against the start button.
I opened the fob on his trunk lid. The PCB had a hairline crack right through the antenna trace. Quick solder bridge to reconnect the circuit, then tested all five buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start. The remote start was the real test since it needs the strongest signal. Worked perfect.
While I had it open, I swapped his CR2032 for a fresh Panasonic. The aftermarket cover went in his recycling bin. These fobs need breathing room, not a death grip from some decorative case.
He mentioned the dealer wanted him there for three days since they had to order the key. Plus whatever they were charging. Instead, 40 minutes in his apartment parking lot and he was loading groceries.
