2020 Cadillac CT5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last?

A properly programmed key matched to OEM spec should last as long as your original. The programming itself doesn't degrade. The CR2450 battery is rated for roughly three to five years of typical use, so plan on a swap before you hit year four. The most common failure point on these fobs isn't the electronics - it's the physical shell. Buttons start to lose their click, the case seam loosens, and eventually a button pad tears.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Every key we make is covered. If it loses start function, remote range drops off, or anything else goes sideways, we come back and fix it. This matters more than people think when they're shopping around. Buying a fob online and finding a cheap programmer to pair it sounds like a plan until the remote quits two months in and neither party wants to own the problem.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my CT5. Can you just program it for me?

Possibly, but there's real risk in that approach on the 2020 CT5. The key system on this car requires fobs that meet specific communication requirements for the vehicle's security and keyless entry architecture. Some fobs sold online list compatibility broadly across multiple GM models and years, and they may not actually complete the pairing sequence on the CT5 specifically. If you bring us a fob that won't program, you've spent money on a blank that's now useless.

Q: My CT5 shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could it be?

A few things. First, CR2450 cells vary a lot by brand - a no-name cell can read "new" on a basic tester and still not deliver clean voltage under the load the fob needs. Swap in a name-brand CR2450 and retest. If that doesn't clear the warning, the issue could be interference. The 2020 CT5 fob operates in a frequency range that shares space with certain aftermarket devices, phone cases with magnetic wallet attachments, and even some wireless chargers.

2020 Cadillac CT5 Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

He had just gotten cleared by his cardiologist and was walking back to his car in Oxnard when nothing worked. No response from the fob, push-button start did nothing, and holding the fob to the backup reader on the steering column got him nowhere either. He had prescriptions to fill and the pharmacy window was closing fast.

The dealer was already shut down for the day. He called me.

I got out to him in Rose Park, popped the door, and connected to the OBD port. His fob - the factory 5-button remote with the CR2450 cell - had a corroded contact inside the battery housing. Corrosion that light doesn't always kill remote range right away, but it absolutely kills the low-power signal the backup coil needs to read the key. So the car just saw nothing.

I replaced the fob, programmed the new one to his vehicle, and walked every function before I called it done. Lock, unlock, push-button start, and the backup start position.

From his call to engine running was 50 minutes. He made it to the pharmacy with time to spare. He didn't say much when he left. He didn't need to.

Cadillac CT5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Cadillac vehicles?▼

We use OEM-spec blanks verified for your specific vehicle. On the 2020 CT5, the key system communicates over a modern CAN-based network, and the fob has to meet those communication specs exactly or programming will fail. That rules out a lot of cheap aftermarket blanks right away - they may physically look identical but won't complete the pairing sequence. The other thing worth knowing: even if an aftermarket fob programs in successfully, the buttons and shell tend to wear faster.
