If your case cracks or a button wears through, the internals can usually be moved into a new shell for much less than a full replacement. The one thing that cuts a key's life short is a bad programming job the first time around, which is why testing every function before leaving the site is not optional.

If a fob loses remote function or the start authorization drops out weeks after programming, it usually points to either an enrollment that did not fully complete, a blank that was not spec-correct for this vehicle, or a battery seating issue. All of those are fixable. The risk with buying a fob online and having anyone program it is that there is no accountability after the van drives away. That is not how I work.

My CT5 fob works for door locks but the push-to-start button does not respond. Is the key dead?

Not necessarily. This is actually one of the more common complaints CT5 owners post about. The remote functions and the start authorization run through different parts of the system. A fob can have enough signal to lock and unlock but not enough to pass the start handshake, especially when battery voltage is borderline.

First move is a fresh CR2450, not just any battery you have sitting around. The CR2450 has specific current output requirements and substituting a different cell can create this exact split symptom.

If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may have a logged communication fault against it in the vehicle's security system. That requires a diagnostic connection to clear and re-enroll the key. It is not something you can reset with an ignition sequence on this generation. The good news is it is a quick job once you are connected to the OBD port with the right software.

I have one working CT5 key and want a spare made before something goes wrong. How does that work?

Smart move. Add-a-key with one working fob present runs about 20 to 30 minutes on the 2023 CT5. I come to you, connect through the OBD port, enroll the new fob alongside your existing one, and test everything before I leave. Your original key keeps working exactly as it did. Waiting until you are down to zero keys costs more time and more money because all-keys-lost is a longer process with a timed security sequence that cannot be skipped. Getting a spare made while you still have a working key is the cheaper and faster path.
