I was out near Ventura Harbor on a Tuesday when I got the call. The customer had already paid someone else for a replacement smart key on his 2021 Cadillac XT4. The other locksmith cut the blade, did something with a tool, handed the key over, and left. The car cranked fine. Then it died after about two seconds, every single time.
He called the first guy back. Got told the body control module was probably bad. Then he called me.
When I arrived, I asked him to try it once so I could watch. Crank, brief fire, shutdown. Classic incomplete immobilizer learn. The blade was cut correctly, I verified that myself. The issue was that the key had been written to the system but the security learn cycle never completed. That sequence has a timed component, and if anything interrupts it or the steps get rushed, the key registers temporarily but doesn't hold. The module keeps the entry but won't authorize the engine to run past that first couple seconds.
I connected through the OBD port, cleared the incomplete key data, and ran a full clean learn with the security timer allowed to finish without interference. Then I tested the key three times back to back. Started clean each time, no cutoff. I walked every button on the fob and confirmed the immobilizer was showing the key as permanently stored before I packed up.
His body control module was fine. Always was. The job just hadn't been done all the way through the first time.
The dealer comparison almost didn't come up. He was just relieved the car ran. But when he asked what the dealer would have charged to sort this out, I told him he'd have paid more and waited a day, at minimum. He'd already spent money on the first locksmith. I couldn't undo that. I could just make sure the second call was the last one.
