Got a call from a guy in the Wagon Wheel neighborhood in Oxnard. His 2013 Dodge Avenger would not start. Remote buttons had been flaky for weeks, then one morning, nothing. No crank, no dash lights responding to the key, just the red security dot blinking at him.
He was standing in the driveway next to a barbershop, hood up like that was going to help.
I pulled the old remote head key apart on my tailgate. The CR2032 was corroded, and the battery clip inside the shell had a green film on it. That kills the remote side, but it should not stop the car from starting. The transponder does not need battery power. So I checked deeper.
Hooked up through OBD and pulled the SKIM status. The module was seeing the key intermittently. Turns out the transponder ring around the ignition cylinder had a loose connector, a known weak spot on these JS-platform Avengers. Reseated the connector, cleaned the contacts, built him a fresh OHT692427AA with a new Y160 blade cut to code, and programmed it through the diagnostic port.
Three clean starts. Tested all five buttons from across the lot, including remote start. Locked, unlocked, trunk. Everything hit.
He had already called the dealer and they quoted him a week wait just for the appointment. I was done in about 40 minutes, standing in his driveway, for a fraction of what they wanted.
