2023 Lexus RZ Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got called to Rancho Sierra Vista for a 2023 RZ that wouldn't recognize its only key. Owner said it started that morning with "Key Not Detected" warnings, then quit completely at lunch.
The HYQ14FLC fob had a fresh CR2032, and the buttons worked fine. But the car acted like no key existed. Connected my IM608 and pulled codes: B2799 for smart communication failure. That's when I remembered the TSB about the rear smart antenna going dead on early production RZs.
Popped the rear seat bottom, found the antenna module, and sure enough, no power at the connector. The antenna itself tests good, but the harness has a weak crimp that fails over time. Cleaned the terminals, secured the connection, cleared codes.
Key recognized instantly. Started the RZ three times, locked and unlocked from 30 feet, no issues. The owner mentioned the dealer wanted the car for two days to diagnose intermittent key problems. Fixed it in his driveway in under an hour.
These first-year RZs have a few growing pains. Good thing I keep up with the bulletins.
