Got called to Camarillo Springs area for a 2025 RZ that wouldn't recognize its only key. Owner tried everything: new CR2032, holding it against the start button, even the emergency blade in the door.
When I arrived, the dash showed "Key System Malfunction." First thing I checked was the 12V battery voltage. These EVs are picky about auxiliary power, and sure enough, it was sitting at 11.8V. Not dead, but low enough to mess with the key receiver module.
I jumped the 12V system and the fob started working immediately. But the owner wanted a backup key after that scare, so I programmed a second HYQ14FLC while I was there. The VVDI pulled the key data through OBD2, added the new fob to slot 2, and I tested all four buttons plus the emergency blade.
The whole time he kept asking about the 12V battery in an EV. Makes sense to wonder why an electric car needs a regular battery. I explained it runs all the computers, locks, and lights when the main traction battery is offline.
He went from thinking he needed a whole new key system to just needing a battery tender for when he leaves town. Plus now he's got that backup fob. Way better outcome than what the dealer was quoting him.
