Got a call from a guy near Cross at Grant Park in Ventura. His 1997 Lincoln Continental would not start. Cranked fine, engine turned over for a second, then died. Theft indicator on the dash blinking like crazy.
He had one key left. The plastic head was cracked almost in half and wrapped in electrical tape. He said it had been like that for a year and worked fine until this morning.
I already knew what happened before I got there. That generation Continental runs PATS I with a glass transponder tube molded inside the key head. When the plastic splits far enough, the tube shifts or cracks, and the PATS transceiver ring around the ignition cylinder can not read it anymore. The system sees a blank key and kills fuel injector pulse after the initial crank.
I pulled the tape off and sure enough, the transponder tube was snapped clean. No signal to read.
Cut a new H72 blank on my Condor, seated a fresh 4C glass chip in the head, then used my programmer on the OBD-II port to write the new key into his PCM. PATS I only holds eight key slots, and he was down to one working, so I made him two and cleared the broken one.
Whole thing took about twenty minutes. He sat on his front steps and watched. Said he had been putting off calling the dealer because he figured it would be an all-day thing. It was not.
