Got a call from a guy near San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura. His 1998 Lincoln Continental would crank and then cut out after about two seconds every time. Classic PATS rejection. He thought the fuel pump died.
He had already called the Lincoln dealer. They told him to tow it in, quoted him a big number, and said it could be a week before they got to it. He found me instead.
I drove out and checked the dash first. The theft light was flashing steady, confirming the transceiver ring around the ignition wasn't reading his key. Pulled his old H72 key out and held it up. The blade was fine, but when I tested the transponder with my T5 reader, nothing came back. Dead 4C glass chip. It happens on these older fixed-code units, especially after years of heat cycles on a keychain.
Cut a fresh H72-PT on my Condor, then ran PATS programming through the OBD-II port with my IM608. The 1998 Continental uses PATS gen one, so the security access timer through the PCM ran about ten minutes per key cycle. I programmed two keys for him so he would have a spare.
He sat on the hood watching the ocean the whole time. When I handed him both keys and the Continental fired right up, he just nodded and said, "Should have called you first."
