I got a call from a guy up in the Hillsides area of Ventura. He'd bought a used 1999 Lincoln Continental with one key, which is how most of these come. The car was sitting in his driveway and he wanted a spare before he started driving it daily. Smart move.
He'd already called a dealer and gotten a number back that made him hesitate. He found me online and asked if the dealer quote was real. I told him it probably was. I met him at the house. The Continental is a transponder key setup, no fob, no remote, just a key that has to be recognized by the immobilizer before the engine will run. I decoded the working key on site, cut a new blank to match, then used my programmer through the OBD port to register the new key to the vehicle.
The thing people don't realize about these older transponder systems is that adding a spare while you still have a working key is a much cleaner job than replacing everything from scratch. He had one good key in hand. That made everything faster.
He ended up with two keys that both start the car, both recognized by the system. And if he ever loses one now, the replacement is an add-a-key job instead of an all-keys-lost job. That distinction matters more than most people think until they need it.
