2000 Lincoln Continental
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does my 2000 Continental need one?

A transponder key carries a small electronic component inside the key head. When you turn it in the ignition, the vehicle reads that component. If the signal matches what the immobilizer has on file, the engine is allowed to start. If it doesn't match -- wrong key, unprogrammed blank, copied blade with no chip -- the car won't run. The 2000 Continental uses this system, so a correctly cut blade alone isn't enough.

Q: How long does the dealer process take if I go that route for a Lincoln key?

Longer than it should. Owners of late-90s and early-2000s Lincolns have described waits ranging from same-day to several days depending on parts availability. The immobilizer programming sequence on this generation enforces a timed wait between each key being added, so even when the parts are in hand, the tech can't rush the process. If the dealer needs to order the key blank, that adds more time before you even get to the programming step.

Q: I have a spare key that was programmed years ago. Will it still work if I've lost my main key?

Yes, as long as nobody wiped the immobilizer memory in the meantime, a previously programmed spare should still start the car. On this generation, programmed keys stay in memory until the system is intentionally reset or all-keys-lost service is performed. If your spare fires it up, hold onto it and call me to cut and program a second key while we still have a working one. Having two programmed keys on hand is always the right position to be in.

Q: What happens if I've lost every key to my 2000 Continental and have nothing left?

All-keys-lost on this vehicle is a more involved job than a simple add-a-key, but it's done regularly and doesn't require a dealer. The process involves accessing the immobilizer through the diagnostic port, clearing the existing key memory, and enrolling the new key or keys into the system from scratch. Because there's no working key to trigger the normal add sequence, the equipment has to initiate the full reset.

2000 Lincoln Continental Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Newbury Park, I got a call from a woman whose 2000 Continental had been sitting in her driveway for two days. Her only key had snapped at the base of the blade, still stuck in the door lock.

She'd already called the Lincoln dealer in the area, and they told her she'd need to bring the car in. She pointed out that she couldn't bring the car in without a working key. The service advisor suggested a tow.

I drove out and found the broken blade with a little extractor work. The ignition cylinder was fine. She had the key code in her paperwork, which saved a decoding step, and I had the right key blank for the Continental in my van.

Cut the replacement on site, then handled the transponder programming so the immobilizer would accept the new key. The car started on the first try.

She wasn't interested in a long conversation about transponder systems or dealer wait times. She wanted her car running before her son got home from school. We finished with time to spare, for a fraction of what the dealer would have charged just to get it in the door.

Lincoln Continental Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Lincoln dealer to get a replacement key for a 2000 Continental?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can cut and program a transponder key for your 2000 Continental on the spot, wherever the car is parked. The immobilizer on this generation shares its architecture with the Ford platform of the same era, which means the same professional tools and key data that cover Ford work here too.
