Got a call from a guy over in the North Ranch neighborhood of Thousand Oaks. His 2003 Lincoln LS would crank but not fire, and the SecuriLock theft indicator on the dash was blinking fast, which told me over the phone it was a PATS problem before I even showed up.
He had one key left. It was worn down to almost nothing, the blade looking like it had been sharpening knives for a decade. The transponder chip inside was still alive, though. That was the good news.
I got to his driveway, decoded the door cylinder with my HU101 Lishi to get a clean cut reading since his original blade was too worn to trace reliably. Cut two fresh H74-PT blanks on my mobile machine right there on his steering column tray.
Here is where the 2003 LS is actually cooperative: PATS II lets you do a two-key teach procedure if you already have one working transponder key. Cycle the existing key, wait for the security light to go solid, swap to the new key within the timing window, and the PCM learns it. Did it twice, once for each spare. Whole thing took maybe 25 minutes.
He had been putting it off because the dealer told him they would need the car towed in and it would be an all-day affair. Instead he watched from his garage while I handled it in his driveway for a fraction of what they wanted.
