A guy called me from a parking lot off Thousand Oaks Boulevard, over near the Westlake Village side. His 2003 Lincoln LS had sat for about three weeks while he was traveling, and when he came back to it, the key turned but the car just cranked and died. Cranked and died. Every time.
He had already called a tow company. I told him to hold off.
When I got there he showed me the key. It was a copy, cut at a hardware store, and whoever made it had done a clean job on the blade. Turned smooth. But the transponder had never been programmed, so the immobilizer was rejecting it on every attempt. The car was doing exactly what it was supposed to do.
I had the right blank on the van, cut a new key to match his lock cylinder, programmed the transponder through the OBD port, and tested it cold. Started right up on the first turn. The tow company never got called back.
He mentioned he'd been quoted a wait and a significant bill at a Lincoln dealer up the freeway. Didn't need any of that. The whole job was done in the lot, same morning he called.
