2025 Mazda CX-90
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular car key?

Your 2025 CX-90 key is a smart key, which means it does a few different jobs at once. There's a physical blade tucked inside the fob for situations where you need to operate a door lock manually. There's a transponder chip inside that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer when you start the car. And there's the remote side, the four buttons that handle lock, unlock, and the other functions, running on a CR2025 battery.

Q: My Mazda is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do?

Start with the CR2025 battery. A low cell is the most common reason that warning appears on the CX-90, and it can happen without much advance notice. Pop the fob open, swap the battery, make sure it's seated flat against both contacts, and retest. If you're already at the point where the car won't start, try holding the fob directly against the start button area and pressing the brake.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my CX-90. Can I just program it myself?

No. The 2025 CX-90 does not have a self-programming mode for smart keys. There's no ignition sequence, no button combination, nothing you can do from the driver's seat to enroll a new fob. Professional scan tool access through the OBD port is required every time. If you already bought the fob, that's fine, bring it. As long as it matches the factory FCC ID for this vehicle, I can enroll it on site.

Q: Can you make a key if I've lost both of them and have nothing left?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2025 CX-90 is a job I can handle on site in Ventura. It takes longer than adding a spare to an existing working key because the process involves clearing the vehicle's key memory and re-enrolling from scratch, which has timed steps built into the sequence. Plan for a longer visit than a standard spare-key job. I'll need to verify ownership before I start, so have your registration and ID ready when I arrive.

2025 Mazda CX-90 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a graduate teaching assistant over near Serra Cross/Grant Park. She had already been through it once.

Some outfit she found through a cheap ad came out, took her money, and left her with a key that half-worked. The car would start if she pressed the fob against the dash near the start button, but from a normal distance it was inconsistent. The lock and unlock buttons were doing nothing at all.

She found me through Google Guaranteed, and before I even finished my pitch she asked for my BSIS license number. I gave it to her on the spot. She pulled it up on the state website while we were still talking. That's exactly what she should have done.

When I got there, I could see what had happened. The previous job had registered the key incompletely. The transponder function had paired but the remote functions hadn't finished enrollment. It's the kind of thing that happens when someone rushes the sequence or their tool drops the connection partway through.

I ran the full keyless enrollment sequence on my scan tool, let it complete without interruption, and walked every function afterward. Lock, unlock, and all four buttons. Push-to-start from a normal seating position, not pressed against the column. Everything came back clean.

She didn't need a new fob. She needed the job done right the first time. I quoted her a price on the phone and that's exactly what she paid. The dealer comparison never even came up. She was just relieved.

Mazda CX-90 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. I carry the extraction tools to remove a broken piece from an ignition cylinder without damaging the cylinder itself. Once it's out, if the cylinder still turns freely, we go straight to cutting and programming a replacement. If the cylinder took damage in the process, that's a separate conversation, but we assess it on site before anything else.
