My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. I carry the extraction tools to remove a broken piece from an ignition cylinder without damaging the cylinder itself. Once it's out, if the cylinder still turns freely, we go straight to cutting and programming a replacement. If the cylinder took damage in the process, that's a separate conversation, but we assess it on site before anything else. The 2025 CX-90 uses a smart key system, so a new key needs both cutting and full electronic enrollment through the OBD port. We do both in one visit.

What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular car key?

Your 2025 CX-90 key is a smart key, which means it does a few different jobs at once. There's a physical blade tucked inside the fob for situations where you need to operate a door lock manually. There's a transponder chip inside that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer when you start the car. And there's the remote side, the four buttons that handle lock, unlock, and the other functions, running on a CR2025 battery.

A traditional key just has the blade and sometimes a chip. A smart key adds the remote and proximity functions to that. The tradeoff is that when something goes wrong, it usually isn't just one thing. If the battery dies, remote functions go first. If the chip or its enrollment gets corrupted, you lose start authorization. And if the fob shell cracks or the blade pivot wears, you can end up with a working electronic key that physically can't operate anything.

That's why I always test all functions separately before I close out a job.

My Mazda is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do?

Start with the CR2025 battery. A low cell is the most common reason that warning appears on the CX-90, and it can happen without much advance notice. Pop the fob open, swap the battery, make sure it's seated flat against both contacts, and retest.

If you're already at the point where the car won't start, try holding the fob directly against the start button area and pressing the brake. The vehicle has a backup antenna near that button specifically for low-battery situations, and it often gets the car started when the fob is too weak to communicate from normal range.

If the new battery doesn't fix it, the problem could be the fob antenna, the vehicle's receiver, or the key enrollment itself. That's where a proper diagnosis matters, because swapping parts without knowing which side is failing gets expensive fast.

I bought a replacement fob online for my CX-90. Can I just program it myself?

No. The 2025 CX-90 does not have a self-programming mode for smart keys. There's no ignition sequence, no button combination, nothing you can do from the driver's seat to enroll a new fob. Professional scan tool access through the OBD port is required every time. If you already bought the fob, that's fine, bring it. As long as it matches the factory FCC ID for this vehicle, I can enroll it on site. You'll just still need the tool side of the job done.

Can you make a key if I've lost both of them and have nothing left?
