Got a call from a guy near Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta. His 2001 CL500 wouldn't turn over. He said "key not detected" and the steering column was locked solid.

I got there and started with the key itself. Popped the shell open on his hood. The 5WK47283 board looked clean, no corrosion, no cracked solder on the IR emitter. But the CR2025 was reading 2.6 volts. That's low enough to drop the infrared signal below what the EIS receiver can pick up, especially on these older C215 units where the EIS window gets foggy from age.
Fresh CR2025, seated flat, tested the voltage at 3.1. Put the board back in the shell, slid the key in, and the EIS picked it up first try. Steering unlocked, dash lit up, engine started.
He just sat there with his hands on the wheel for a second. Like he was waiting for something to go wrong again.
