Got a call from a guy over in the Isla Vista area of Goleta. His 2003 CL500 was sitting in the driveway doing nothing. Key would lock and unlock fine from the remote, but slide it into the EIS and the dash just sat there. No crank, steering lock stuck engaged, the whole car playing dead.

He had already been through it with the dealer. They wanted the car towed in, quoted weeks of wait time for diagnostics, and told him the EIS module itself might need replacing. That conversation alone took the wind out of him. You could hear it in his voice on the phone.

I got out there and started with the basics. Pulled the key apart, checked the IR transmitter window, swapped the CR2025. Then I connected to the EIS through the OBD port and read the key data. His key was actually still recognized in slot one. The problem was the ESL, the electronic steering lock module sitting on the column. It had lost communication with the EIS, a known failure pattern on W215 and W220 chassis cars. The motor gear inside gets stuck or the module just stops responding.

Got the ESL sorted on site, resynced everything, and tested the start sequence a half dozen times. He stood behind me the whole time with his arms crossed, not saying a word, just watching. When the V8 turned over clean on the last test, he finally uncrossed his arms.

He kept his original key. No parts from Germany. No tow truck.
