Got a call from someone out near Coal Oil Point Reserve in Goleta. Their 2007 CL550 key had taken a fall onto tile and the housing cracked right along the seam where the chrome trim meets the plastic. Remote buttons still worked from across the parking lot, but the car wouldn't start. Just sat there with "Key not recognized" on the dash.

I pulled the key apart on their kitchen counter. The IR emitter board inside was fine. The NEC chip was fine. What happened was the crack let the battery shift just enough to lose contact with the IR side while the RF remote side still had juice. Two different circuits, two different behaviors. That trips people up every time.
Swapped the guts into a new housing, fresh CR2025, seated everything tight. Walked out to the car, tested the IR start sequence, all four buttons, remote range from about 50 feet. Started right up.
