Got a call from a guy near Stow Grove Park in Goleta. 2005 CL-Class, all keys gone. He had already called the Mercedes dealer and they told him to have it flatbedded in, leave it for three to five business days, and wait for a key to be ordered through their system. Showed up, popped the hood, verified the EIS module. The C215 CL uses an infrared key system where the EIS has to be read, the key data extracted, and a new key written to match. Connected to the OBD-II port, pulled the EIS data, and got the new key cut on site from the code. No existing key needed.
The part that took the longest was the EIS sync. These older Mercedes modules are slower to handshake than the newer ones, so there is a wait period built into the process. He stood by the driver door watching the dash. When the key turned and the engine fired, he just nodded, like he had been holding his breath for two days.
Whole thing was about 40 minutes. He drove off without ever calling that tow truck.
