Got a call from over near Simi Valley Hospital in Simi Valley. Guy had a 1997 SL500, hardtop parked in the lot, no working key at all. He had one years ago, lost it during a move, and had been using a plain cut metal key a previous shop made to turn the ignition. That worked for a while because someone before him had left the immobilizer in "virgin" mode. Then the EIS module updated itself during a battery replacement and locked him out. Classic R129 problem.
I pulled up, connected to the EIS through the OBD-II port under the dash. The module came back as the older 5-button NEC type, which matched the era. Ran the all-keys-lost procedure, cleared out whatever ghost key data was stored, and registered a fresh 5WK47283 remote head key cut to factory spec right there on the hood.
The IR remote was the part he cared about most. He had been manually locking and unlocking for months. I pointed the key at the door handle receiver, hit lock, hit unlock, watched the indicators confirm. Then we tested trunk release and the panic button.
He sat in the driver's seat, turned the ignition, and the engine caught without the immobilizer light flashing. He just sat there for a second, hands on the wheel, like he forgot what that felt like.
Dealer would have wanted the car towed in and kept for days. We handled it on a Wednesday afternoon in a parking lot.
