Got a call from a guy in Manning Park, Montecito. His 2001 SL500 had been sitting in the garage for about three weeks because the only key he had stopped turning the ignition. He said the blade would go in but it felt like it was catching on something. He had already called the dealer and they told him to tow it in, and that the Electronic Ignition Switch module on the steering column would probably need to be replaced along with the key.
I drove out and looked at the key first. The chrome head key with the four-button IR remote, part number 5WK47283. The blade had a small bend near the tip, just enough to hang on the EIS wafers. I checked the EIS with my diagnostic tool and the module responded fine, no fault codes, no failed positions. The ignition switch itself was healthy.
Cut a fresh blade to code, matched the transponder to the EIS through the OBD-II port using the existing key data, and synced the infrared remote. The whole thing took about 25 minutes on his garage floor.
He had been ready to have the car flatbedded across town and pay for a full EIS swap. Turned out to be a bent blade and a spare key he never had made. He just sat in the driver's seat for a second after it started, like he forgot what the plan was for the rest of the day.
