Got a call from a guy in Silver Strand neighborhood in Oxnard. His 2012 SL550 was sitting in his driveway with one key that worked about half the time. Turn it, nothing. Pull it out, reinsert, engine fires right up. Next try, dead again.
He had already been to the Mercedes dealer. They told him new key, ordered from Germany by VIN, could be one to three weeks. He drove home on the one sketchy key and started searching for other options.
I pulled up, popped the back cover off his IYZ-3312 fob, and the CR2025 was original. Six years old at that point and reading low on the meter. But that was only half the story. The blade had some wear on the shoulder cuts, and the transponder response was intermittent when I tested it against the EIS. Weak battery plus a tired key that was confusing the N73 module.
Cut a fresh 5WK47283 blank on the HU64 profile right on his driveway, programmed it to the EIS using the working key's data, and tested ignition cycles until I was bored with it. Locks, trunk, panic button, start. All four buttons and the transponder handshake, solid every time.
He kept the old key as a backup after I put a fresh CR2025 in it. Now he had two instead of gambling on one. Whole thing took about 40 minutes. The dealer hadn't even called him back yet.
