2009 Mercedes-Benz SL Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy out in Moorpark near Underwood Family Farms. His 2009 SL550 had one working key left and the remote buttons on it were dead. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, nothing. He had already swapped the CR2025 twice.
When I got there, he handed me the key and I could feel it before I even cracked it open. Slight rattle. I split the shell on the tailgate and the NEC chip board had a film of dried moisture across half of it. One of the battery contact pads had a thin ring of green corrosion right where it meets the CR2025. The key still started the car because the transponder side was fine, but the RF circuit for the remote was half shorted from that buildup.
Cleaned the board contacts, hit the corroded pad with a fiberglass pen, reseated a fresh CR2025, and closed it back up. All four buttons came back. He stood there pressing lock and unlock over and over from about forty feet away like he was testing me.
The transponder and EIS/EZS handshake were good the whole time. His car never had a starting problem. It was just the remote half of the key dying a slow death from moisture. He had been manually locking and unlocking with the blade for two weeks because he thought the whole fob was finished.
Saved him a trip to the dealer and a good chunk of change on a replacement he did not need.
