Got a call from a guy up near Montecito Peak Trail in Montecito. His 2008 SL550 had one working key left, and the remote buttons on it had gone completely dead. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, nothing. He was using the HU64 blade to manually unlock the door every time, then jamming the key in the EIS to start it. Worked, but he was over it.
He told me the dealer wanted him to leave the car and come back in about two weeks. That was the part that really got to him. Not even the cost. Just the idea of dropping off an SL for two weeks over a key.
I met him in his driveway. Pulled the old key apart on his patio table. The CR2025 was original, probably eight years dead. Contacts inside the 5WK47283 fob housing had some green corrosion right where the battery sits. Cleaned the contact pads, dropped in a fresh CR2025, and reassembled.
Remote came back to life. All four buttons tested clean from 30 feet. But while I was there, I cut and programmed a spare key through the OBD port so he would not end up in a single-key situation again. The EIS accepted the new key, infrared handshake passed, engine started on the first turn.
He watched the whole thing from a patio chair. Took maybe 35 minutes total. No tow, no loaner car, no two-week wait.
