Got a call from a guy up off Cold Spring Trail in Montecito. His 2006 SL500 had one working key left, the chrome trim on the fob was cracked, and the panic button had stopped responding. He had already called the Mercedes dealer in Santa Barbara. They told him three to five business days, plus a tow if the remaining key failed before then.

I pulled the EIS data through the OBD port, read the key positions from the N73 module, and matched the new IYZ-3312 fob to an open slot. Cut the HU64 blade on site, programmed the transponder to the EIS, synced the remote and Keyless-Go functions. Then the part that matters: tested every button, tested passive entry on both doors, tested the trunk release, and started and shut down the engine three times to make sure the immobilizer handshake was clean.

He held both keys, the old cracked one and the new one, and just kind of weighed them in his hands. "Should have done this a year ago."

Whole thing took about 35 minutes. No tow, no loaner car, no second trip across town. Just a working spare, done in his driveway, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
