Got a call from a muffler shop near Elings Park in Santa Barbara. A customer's 2000 Eclipse was sitting in the lot, dead to the world. Another locksmith had already been out, tried programming a key through the OBD port, hit an immobilizer error, and left. Told the shop the ETACS module was probably fried and they'd need a dealer.
The shop wasn't buying it. They found me online and asked if I could take a look.
I brought my ACDP bench tool because I had a feeling. Pulled the ETACS unit from behind the dash, read the EEPROM data, and there it was. The previous attempt had interrupted mid-write. The module wasn't dead, just stuck in a fault state rejecting all new transponder registration. Cleared the corrupted data, rebuilt the key table from scratch, and loaded a fresh ID4D60 chip tied to the module.
Put everything back together, cut the MIT9 blade to code, and turned the key. Started on the first try. No security light, no crank-no-start.
I walked the shop guys through what went wrong so they'd know the difference between a failed programming attempt and an actual dead module. The whole thing took about 75 minutes including the pull and reinstall.
The alternative was a flatbed to the nearest Mitsubishi dealer and a multi-day wait for a fraction of the result. I carry bench tools for exactly this kind of wall.
