2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key, and why can't I just get a copy made at the hardware store?

The 2005 Eclipse uses a transponder key. There's a chip inside the plastic head that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. The immobilizer checks for a valid signal, and if it doesn't get one, the engine won't run -- even if the key turns the cylinder perfectly. A hardware store can cut the blade to match your lock, but they can't program the chip.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a 2005 Eclipse key?

Professional diagnostic tools that can communicate with the immobilizer on this generation of Eclipse. The 2005 model sits in a range where some older scan tools struggle and some shops don't bother keeping the right coverage for it. I've heard from Eclipse owners who called around and got turned away because the shop's software didn't go back that far or they didn't have the right cable setup.

Q: My 2005 Eclipse cranks but won't start. Could it be the immobilizer?

Yes, and it's one of the more common misdiagnoses on these cars. If the engine cranks normally but refuses to fire, and there's a key-not-recognized or security warning on the dash, the immobilizer is a strong suspect. The system cuts fuel or ignition when it doesn't see a valid key signal.

Q: Can I program a replacement Eclipse key myself at home?

Not on this one. The 2005 Eclipse transponder key requires professional programming equipment to register to the vehicle. There's no ignition-turn sequence or DIY onboard relearn available for this system. If you've bought a replacement key blank online, the cut blade is the easy part -- the chip still needs to be programmed by someone with the right tools before the car will run.

2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was in the parking lot behind the pediatrician's office on Chapala, right in the middle of Downtown Santa Barbara. Kid running a fever, prescription waiting, and the Eclipse would not start.

It was after seven. The dealer was closed. She had a key that turned the ignition fine but the car just cranked and cranked without catching. She told me later she thought it was the engine. It wasn't.

I got there, checked the ignition, and the key she was using was a hardware store copy someone had cut for her months back. It looked right. It turned right. But the transponder chip inside was never programmed to her car, so the immobilizer was doing exactly what it's supposed to do -- keeping the engine from running.

I cut a proper replacement key and programmed it to the vehicle on site. First turn, the engine started. She just sat there for a second like she wasn't sure it was real.

From her call to engine running was under an hour. She had the prescription picked up and her kid home before nine. The dealer question never even came up. That wasn't what mattered that night.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few things to watch for. If someone quotes you one price on the phone and recalculates when they arrive, that's a bait and switch -- it happens more than it should. Look for a real business name with actual reviews, not a generic listing with a stock photo. A locksmith who works on Mitsubishis should be able to tell you right away whether they've programmed this specific model and what equipment they use.
