Got a call from a muffler shop over near West Beach in Santa Barbara. A customer's 2007 Eclipse was sitting on their lift with no working key, and they'd already had another locksmith out. That locksmith hit an immobilizer error during programming, couldn't clear it, and left. Told the shop the ETACS module was probably fried.
The shop didn't buy it. They called me.
I showed up with my ACDP bench tool because I already had a feeling OBD wasn't going to cut it. Pulled the ETACS module from behind the dash, read the data off the board, and found exactly what I expected: a fault state from an interrupted programming sequence. The previous attempt died mid-write, and now the module was rejecting all new key registration.
Cleared the fault, rebuilt the key data from scratch on the bench, and loaded it back in. Cut a new MIT6 blade, paired the ID46 chip, and the car started on the first turn. Clean.
I walked the shop tech through what went wrong so he'd recognize it if another customer came in with the same story. Took about 75 minutes total with the module pull and reinstall.
The alternative was a flatbed to the Mitsubishi dealer, a multi-day wait, and a bill that would have been significantly more. I carry bench tools specifically for when OBD alone hits a wall.
