2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement key last on a 2004 Eclipse?

A properly cut and programmed key should last as long as the car does. The transponder programming doesn't wear out. What does wear is the blade itself, especially on a daily driver where the key goes in and out of the ignition hundreds of times a year. If the blade wears enough, it can start to misread the ignition wafers and you get an intermittent no-start that has nothing to do with the chip.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. We back up the work. If the key stops starting the car or develops any issue, I come back and make it right. I test every key before I leave, including multiple start cycles. That said, if something does go sideways later, it's worth knowing whether anything changed on your end: new battery, car sat a long time, someone else tried a different key. Those details help me diagnose faster when I come back.

Q: Can I get a second key made for my 2004 Eclipse, or does Mitsubishi limit how many keys the car will accept?

You can have multiple keys programmed to the 2004 Eclipse. The immobilizer will hold more than one key in memory, so adding a spare is a normal job. Having a second key made while you still have a working original is also the smarter play. All-keys-lost situations on this car take longer and cost more because the process is different when there's no working key to reference.

Q: My 2004 Eclipse cranks but won't start, and the security light stays on. Is that the transponder?

That pattern, engine cranks but won't fire and a security-related warning stays lit, points toward the immobilizer not seeing a valid key signal. On the 2004 Eclipse, when the system doesn't recognize the transponder, it cuts fuel and the car won't run even though everything else seems fine. It's a different symptom from a dead battery or a bad starter.

2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already running calls in Santa Barbara on a Saturday afternoon when the text came in from someone over on the Eastside. Their 2004 Eclipse wouldn't start.

They'd had a spare cut at a hardware store, the original key was worn down, and now neither one was working reliably. The hardware store copy would crank the engine and then it would just die. Classic transponder mismatch. The copy had the right cut but nothing talking to the immobilizer.

I pulled up with the right blank already in the drawer. Cut it on site, programmed the transponder to the car, and tested it three times before I called it done. Started clean every time.

The owner mentioned they'd called the dealer first. The dealer quoted them a multi-day wait because the parts had to be ordered, plus a tow since the car wasn't reliably starting. They got it done on a Saturday afternoon in their own driveway instead, for a fraction of what they were quoted. That's the difference when somebody actually stocks the blank instead of sourcing it after you call.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on the 2004 Eclipse?▼

We match the correct blank and transponder spec to the vehicle before we head out. The 2004 Eclipse is a transponder key with no remote involved, so the job comes down to two things: the right blade profile and a chip that the immobilizer will accept. Some aftermarket blanks cut fine but have inconsistent chip quality, and that's where you get a key that works Tuesday and doesn't work Thursday. We use blanks we've verified on these cars.
