A guy pulled into a gas station near East Beach in Santa Barbara with his 2006 Eclipse GS and felt the key bind hard in the ignition. The MIT8 blade was worn down on one side, wafers grabbing at it every turn. He said he could feel it about to snap and decided not to push his luck.
Smart move. A snapped blade stuck in the ignition barrel on these means pulling the steering column shroud and extracting, which turns a simple key job into something bigger and slower.
I grabbed the door lock first. The passenger side cylinder on these fourth-gen Eclipses is usually the cleaner one, less wear from daily use. Decoded it with my MIT8 Lishi, got clean reads on all the wafer positions, and cut a fresh blade to code. Then I cloned the ID46 transponder and ran the OBD learn cycle through the ETACS module. One cycle, chip registered, immobilizer cleared.
He turned the new key and it caught clean. No binding, no hesitation. He sat there for a second just turning it back and forth like he was testing whether it was real.
The whole thing took maybe 35 minutes from when I pulled up. He had been quoted a tow plus a multi-day wait at the dealer just to get on the schedule. He drove out of that gas station on his own timeline instead.
