2013 Ram 1500
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you wipe lost or stolen keys from my Ram so they can't start the truck anymore?

Yes, and it's built into the programming process. When I run an all-keys-lost procedure on your Ram, the vehicle security system drops every previously registered key from memory. Whatever was programmed before -- your original keys, a spare at the bottom of a junk drawer, anything -- none of it works after that. Only the newly programmed keys will start the truck or operate the remote functions. If the keys were stolen rather than just misplaced, this matters a lot.

Q: Does my Ram remote head key have a hidden emergency blade?

It does, but it's not really hidden -- the whole key is a remote head key, meaning the blade is integrated right into the fob body. The blade folds or detaches depending on your exact configuration, and it works in the door lock cylinder directly. Where a lot of Ram owners get caught off guard: if the battery in the fob dies completely and the truck has push-to-start, you can still start it.

Q: My Ram 1500 remote head key fob stopped locking and unlocking but the truck still starts fine. What's going on?

This is a common call. The remote functions and the ignition/start system run independently in these trucks. If the truck starts normally but the lock and unlock buttons stopped responding, the issue is almost always the CR2032 battery going low or losing contact inside the fob. Weak batteries on these can cause the remote to drop out completely while the transponder side still has just enough power to communicate at the ignition cylinder. Swap the battery first.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 Ram 1500. Can I program it myself?

Short answer: probably not without a tool. The 2013 Ram 1500 remote head key does have an onboard add-a-key relearn sequence, but it requires a currently working programmed key to initiate it. If you have one working key and bought a second blank, there's a chance the onboard sequence gets you there. If you have zero working keys, that sequence won't start and you need OBD equipment. Either way, the blade still has to be cut to your specific truck.

2013 Ram 1500 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in West Simi Valley called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He was parked in his driveway, truck running, and his 2013 Ram 1500 remote head key had just snapped at the base of the blade.

Clean break, right where the metal meets the plastic shell. The truck was idling because he'd started it before the break, but he knew the second he shut it off, he wasn't starting it again without a new key.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him they could get him in Thursday. He had work at five in the morning Wednesday.

I was in West Simi Valley within the hour.

The blade was cut to his vehicle using my decoder on the door lock. Blade profile matched the original once I pulled the broken piece out. I cut the new remote head key blank, tested the blade in the door and ignition cylinder, then ran the OBD programming sequence from my van. The whole job was done before his neighbor finished washing a car two driveways down.

He asked me to throw a second one on while I was there, which makes sense. A spare remote head key on a truck like this isn't a luxury item -- it's cheap insurance, and getting a second key programmed while the equipment is already connected takes almost no extra time.

He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted for a single key with a two-day wait. I handed him two working keys, tested both, and was back on the 118 before rush hour.

Ram 1500 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my Ram 1500?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call a tow truck. Dealer quotes for all-keys-lost on these trucks are steep, and most shops won't get to it same day. You'd also be paying to tow a locked, dead-keyed truck across town before any of the actual work starts. When I handle an all-keys-lost on a 2013 Ram 1500, I come to the truck wherever it is -- your driveway in West Simi Valley, your job site, wherever.
