Saturday afternoon in Simi Valley, out by the Wood Ranch neighborhood ballfields. A guy flagged me down in the parking lot while his kid was still in the dugout. His 2016 Ram 1500 had one working Fobik left and the shell was cracked down the seam, battery door gone, CR2032 held in by tape. He had been nursing it for months.
I decoded the door lock, cut the GQ4-53T blade on my mobile unit, then connected to the OBD port and pulled up the WIN module. Read the PIN from the RF Hub, registered the new Fobik, and let the system run its security handshake. The Sentry Key accepted the new transponder on the first pass.
Then the part that matters. I walked out past the bleachers hitting lock, unlock, and remote start. Came back and ran three cold starts in a row. Tested the tailgate release. Checked that the panic button triggered the horn and lights. He was leaning on the bed watching every step.
He told me he figured I would hand him the key and leave. Most of the testing took longer than the actual programming. But that is the whole point. If the remote start works at the truck but drops out at thirty feet, that is a problem I want to catch before I drive off, not something you discover at the grocery store.
He kept his old Fobik as a backup. I told him to at least get a new CR2032 and tape-free battery door for it.
