The parking lot at the gym off Ponderosa Drive in Mission Oaks, Camarillo, at 4:45 in the morning is about as empty as it gets. One truck, one guy, one very bad start to the day.
He'd bought his 2024 Ram 1500 used with a single smart key fob. Always meant to get a second one made. Hadn't gotten around to it. The fob housing had developed a crack near the key ring loop over time, and that morning it let go completely in his jacket pocket on the way in. The integrated blade broke at the pivot. He had the fob pod in one hand and no way into the truck, no way to start it, and a group of five clients showing up in fifteen minutes.
He called me. I was already running early, so I was there in about twenty minutes.
The fob housing was cracked through, but the internal circuit board was intact. That matters a lot on an all-keys-lost job, because a readable board means I can work with what's there rather than starting from scratch with a full security reset. I transferred the board into a new housing, cut a replacement blade to match the truck, and ran the programming through the diagnostic port to re-pair everything with the vehicle's immobilizer.
He was inside the truck and testing every button before his clients pulled in. I stayed until I'd walked all the door functions, the start, and the remote operations. Everything confirmed.
He mentioned on his way back inside that the dealer had told him a replacement would take a couple of days to order and would cost noticeably more than what he paid me. He said he'd wished he'd just called me three years earlier when he first thought about getting a spare.
He has two keys now.
