I cut the emergency blade to the car, programmed two new fobs, and verified that both keys started the engine and that all four buttons on each fob were working before I packed up.
She drove home that night. The dealer would have had her tow the car and wait until the following week.
One thing worth knowing: once I wipe the key memory and register new keys, the stolen fob is dead to the immobilizer. It cannot start the car. It could still physically unlock the door if someone got close with it, which is why the dealer recommended rekeying the locks. That is a real concern after a theft and worth thinking about.
