Out in Nyeland Acres, I got a call from a guy who'd bought a second fob online and was trying to figure out why it wouldn't do anything. He'd watched a couple of videos, tried every button sequence he could find, and even reset his car's clock at some point because someone in a forum told him to try that. Nothing worked.
He'd already put a fresh CR2032 in the new fob. Good move. But the fob itself was just sitting there, unrecognized by the car. That's how it works on this generation. The 2020 Crosstrek smart key system does not have a self-programming mode you can activate from the driver's seat. A new fob needs to be enrolled through the OBD port with professional diagnostic equipment. No workaround exists.
I pulled up to his driveway with my gear, connected to the OBD port, and ran through the Subaru key registration process. It reads the vehicle's security data, confirms what keys are already enrolled, and registers the new fob into the system. His original key stayed active the whole time. New fob came right up. Tested all four buttons, tested proximity start, walked both doors. Everything worked.
He asked what a dealer would have charged him. I told him it would have been a significant amount more, and he would have needed to drive there with his working key or tow the car in. He'd already done the hard part by buying the fob. I just finished the job.
