2019 Subaru Crosstrek
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy renting a vacation place in Montecito's Upper Village called me on a Saturday afternoon in a quiet panic.

He had driven up from out of town for the weekend, parked in the driveway, and somewhere between unloading bags and getting settled, his fob stopped being recognized by the car. The door handles were not waking up on touch, the dash was throwing a key warning at him, and he was staring at a rental host's note that said the nearest Subaru dealer was a solid drive away and closed until Monday.

He had already called the dealer's after-hours line. The answer was: tow it in, earliest appointment Monday afternoon, parts may need to be ordered.

I was in Montecito within the hour. He met me in the driveway looking like a man doing the math on how a weekend trip turns into a Monday ordeal.

First thing I did was open the fob on the hood. The CR2032 was in there, but the positive contact clip was sitting almost flat. Not dead, just barely making contact. I reset the clip tension, cleaned both contact surfaces, reseated the battery, and we tested it standing right there in the Upper Village afternoon sun. Touch unlock on the driver door woke right up. Dash was clean. Fob range was back.

That was it. No new key needed. He had a working car in under fifteen minutes and made it out for the evening with the weekend intact.

I tell people this not to undersell the bigger jobs, but because the right move first is always diagnose before cutting and programming. The dealer route would have eaten his whole weekend for a contact clip.
