A teacher near the Montecito Country Club had just picked up a used 2017 Crosstrek from an auction lot. Clean car, good price, one smart key. She called the Subaru dealer to ask about a spare and they quoted her a number that made her pause. On a Crosstrek. She wasn't expecting that.

I met her at the lot before she drove it home. Her key was the HYQ14AHC with the 88835-AL04A housing, four buttons, standard for the push-button-start Crosstrek trims. I used my programmer to read the working key's DST-AES transponder data and write it onto a fresh blank so the BSM accepted it without a full security reset. Cut the emergency insert blade from a decode of her driver door lock, matched it clean.
Tested every function standing next to the car. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Push-button start from both the driver seat and the passenger seat where the antenna pickup can be weaker. Everything matched the original.
She drove home with two working keys. That spare also means if she ever loses one, the next job is a simple add-a-key instead of all-keys-lost, which saves a good chunk down the road.
