1999 Lexus RX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman in Bressi Ranch called me on a Tuesday morning. She was parked in her driveway, kids already dropped at school, and her remote head key had stopped unlocking the doors. The key still turned in the ignition, the car still started, but the lock and unlock buttons were completely dead. She had pressed the buttons about a hundred times by the time I pulled up.
First thing I checked was the battery. CR1616, original to who knows when, and it was reading almost nothing on the tester. Swapped it on the hood. Buttons still dead.
That told me it wasn't the battery. The transmitter itself had given up. These remote head keys from this era are one piece, so there's no separating the fob from the blade. The whole unit needed replacing.
I cut a new key blade to match her ignition, programmed the replacement remote head key to the vehicle's receiver right there in the driveway, and walked every function: lock, unlock, trunk release, all three buttons. Took about 35 minutes start to finish.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get a part in. I was done before her coffee got cold. That part she appreciated more than anything else.
