2021 Lexus RX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2021 Lexus RX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a collision center off Carmel Mountain Ranch Road in San Diego. A customer's 2021 Lexus RX had just come out of repairs, and the body shop had brought in another locksmith to sort out the key situation post-repair.

That locksmith ran a programming attempt, hit an error mid-sequence, and walked. Left the immobilizer in a fault state that was now rejecting every new key registration attempt. The shop was stuck.

When a previous programming attempt gets abandoned partway through, the system can lock itself into a state where it won't accept new credentials. Some locksmiths see that rejection and tell the customer it needs to go to the dealer. That advice isn't wrong exactly, but it isn't the whole picture either.

I brought bench programming equipment capable of reading and writing at the module level. I pulled the relevant control unit, read the memory directly, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the key registration table from scratch. After that the process was clean. The new fob, matching the factory button count and configuration for this vehicle, registered on the first attempt.

I walked the body shop tech through what had happened so they could explain it to the customer, and so they'd know what to ask a locksmith before the next time. Total job was about 90 minutes on site.

The alternative was a flatbed, a multi-day dealer queue, and a bill that would have been a significant multiple of what I charged. The customer got the key, the shop got the car out, and everyone moved on with their day.
