I got a call from someone parked near Rancho Santa Fe Village who had been sitting in his 2020 Lexus RX for about twenty minutes trying to figure out why the car would not start. The fob was in his hand. The push-to-start was lit. Nothing was happening.
He had already done the thing people do: held the fob closer to the button, pressed harder, checked his surroundings like maybe the car was judging the situation. When I got there, the dash was showing a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting on the center console.
First thing I did was pop the fob open on the hood where he could watch. The CR2032 inside looked fine visually, but it was reading low on voltage. Swapped it out, reseated the contacts. Tried the start button. Still nothing. At that point I knew this was a registration issue, not a battery issue.
I connected my diagnostic equipment and pulled up the immobilizer data. The fob was showing as unrecognized by the vehicle. Somewhere between a previous battery swap or a hard reset on the car, the key had lost its pairing. I ran the registration procedure through the OBD port, confirmed the fob came back as a recognized key, and tested every function: door handles, start, lock, the works.
He asked if the dealer would have figured this out the same day. I told him honestly, probably not same day. They would have kept the car, run their own diagnostics, and called him the next morning. He was back on the road in about forty-five minutes from when I arrived.
The dealer comparison was not even really part of the conversation. He just wanted to get moving again.
