2012 Lexus RX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
It was a weeknight call, close to 6pm, from a parking lot near a medical office in Downtown Ramona. A woman had taken her father to a specialist appointment.
He was elderly, in a wheelchair, and she had just gotten him loaded and ready to go when the 2012 Lexus RX went unresponsive. Touch the door handle, nothing. Press the start button, nothing. She held the fob right up against the button like most people do when they get desperate, still nothing. Dealer closed. She called me.
When I got there she was standing next to the car with her father still in the chair beside it, trying to stay calm for his sake. I could see she was past calm herself.
I got the door open, connected my diagnostic equipment, and pulled up the immobilizer data. The fob's battery contact had corroded, badly enough that the transponder chip inside wasn't transmitting at all. The vehicle security system wasn't rejecting the key. It simply wasn't hearing it. There is a difference, and it matters for what you do next.
I swapped in a new fob, programmed it through the OBD port, and walked every function: door handles both sides, start button, all four buttons on the fob, the whole check. Then I handed it to her and let her run through it herself. She needed to feel it work with her own hand.
Her father was home that evening. That part stays with me on calls like this.
She mentioned the dealer quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment. I don't say that to sell against anyone. I say it because when you're standing in a parking lot with an elderly parent and a car that won't start, "several days" is not an answer.
