I got a call from a collision center in The Bridges area of Rancho Santa Fe. A customer had brought his 2014 Lexus RX in for post-repair work, and the body shop needed a replacement smart key made before the car went back to him. They had already called another locksmith. That locksmith connected his tool, hit an error mid-sequence, and left. The smart key module was sitting in a fault state, and the shop had no idea what that meant or what to do next.

That is the worst version of this job. A clean all-keys-lost is one thing. A corrupted registration table left behind by a failed attempt is something else. The system had already been touched, and now it was rejecting everything.

I brought my bench programming equipment. I pulled the module, read the memory directly, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch. Once the module was clean, the new fob paired on the first attempt without a fight.

I walked the body shop through what had happened, not to throw the other guy under the bus, but because they needed to understand what to tell the next locksmith if this ever came up again. Some tools handle that fault recovery. A lot of them do not.

The whole job ran about 90 minutes on site. The customer got his RX back the same day. The alternative was a flatbed ride to the Lexus dealer, a multi-day turnaround, and a bill that would have been a significant chunk more than what I charged. I carry the bench tools specifically for situations like this, because sometimes the hardest part of the job is undoing someone else's start.
