2015 Lexus RX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a Smart Key and why does my 2015 RX need it programmed to start?

The fob on your 2015 RX isn't just a remote. It carries a programmed transponder that the vehicle's immobilizer reads every time you go to start the car. The system checks that the fob in range is an authorized one before it allows the engine to run. A fob that hasn't been registered to your specific vehicle will get rejected, even if it's the correct model fob with a fresh battery and the right blade.

Q: What tools do you actually use to program a Lexus Smart Key?

Professional immobilizer programmers that communicate through the OBD port and run the registration sequence the vehicle's security system requires. For the 2015 RX specifically, adding or replacing a fob is a tool-dependent job. There's no onboard self-programming sequence you can run yourself on a Smart Key vehicle. I also carry non-destructive entry tools for getting inside when the door handles aren't responding.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or is there a catch?

It depends on what you bought. Aftermarket fobs vary a lot in quality, and some of them have transponder components that don't register cleanly even with the right equipment. The factory fob for this vehicle is the most reliable path. If you've already got an aftermarket unit in hand, bring it and I'll tell you upfront whether it's worth attempting. I won't charge you to find out it's a bad part.

Q: My 2015 RX starts fine but the key-not-detected warning keeps popping up while I'm driving. What's going on?

This one comes up on forums a fair amount with this generation. If the car starts and runs but throws that warning while you're moving, the most common causes are a fob battery that's borderline low, the fob sitting somewhere in the cabin that's interfering with the signal like a metal console tray, or a second fob nearby with a dead battery that's creating noise in the system.

2015 Lexus RX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call on a Tuesday morning from a real estate agent working out of Kearny Mesa. She had a client walkthrough across town at 9am and her RX wouldn't respond to anything. Push-to-start was dark, door handles weren't sensing her, and the fob felt completely dead. She'd already pulled the spare from her purse and that one was doing the same thing. She hadn't touched either fob in months.

I was in the parking lot off Convoy in about 25 minutes.

Both fobs had the same problem: drained CR1632 cells. Not unusual when two keys sit unused for a stretch and nobody thinks to check them. I replaced both batteries, seated them correctly, and ran through the full test cycle on-site. Door handle touch-unlock, all four buttons, the start sequence. Everything came back clean. No programming work needed at all.

The part that got her was how fast it went. She'd already mentally prepared for a tow and a dealer appointment and a blown morning. Instead she was pulling out of the lot before 8:30.

I didn't even bring up what the dealer would have quoted. She figured that out herself.

Lexus RX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things. First, a real business name with verifiable Google and Yelp reviews. Scam operations run dozens of different phone numbers and names that all route to the same call center with no physical presence. Second, ask for a firm price on the phone for your specific vehicle. If they won't give you a number until they're standing next to your car, that's a setup for a bait-and-switch.
