2008 Lexus RX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2008 Lexus RX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

The Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe is the kind of neighborhood where the gate guard checks your ID before you pull through. I have learned to have my business card ready before I even stop.

A homeowner there called me on a Saturday afternoon. Her 2008 RX had been sitting in her driveway since the night before. The blade on her remote head key had cracked at the pivot point, that small hinge where the blade folds into the housing. It was still attached by a thread of plastic. She was afraid to use it and afraid not to, because it was her only key.

She had already called the Lexus dealer in the morning. Earliest appointment was Tuesday. They also needed the car there, which meant a tow, which meant the car leaving her driveway on a flatbed on a weekend. She said no to all of that and found me instead.

I cleared the gate, parked in her driveway, and pulled out my equipment. I decoded the lock to confirm the cut, then cut a fresh replacement key blade to match. The remote head housing got transferred over, the transponder got registered through the OBD port, and I tested the remote functions and the start. Everything worked. She had two tested keys by the time I packed up.

The dealer comparison came up once, almost as an aside. She mentioned what they quoted, said it was more than she expected, and moved on. The car never left the driveway.
