If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the remote may have gone out of sync with the receiver. That's a resync procedure, not a full replacement. If the key shell is cracked or the buttons are physically worn through, that's when you're looking at replacing the whole unit, because the chip and the remote housing are one piece on this key.
